If you are an enthusiast of cars, motorcycles and mechanics, a workshop is like a second home to you. It is a place where you pursue your passion to your heart’s content, relax and spend some quality time by yourself.
Since workshops contain expensive cars, motorbikes and heavy equipment, it is necessary to ensure they are durable, damage resistant, and functional. They should also be appealing to look at rather than appear like an enormous chunk of metal.
Prefab garages combine the qualities of functionality, aesthetics and efficiency. They come with a steel garage kit containing all the primary and secondary components required to build the structure.
But what are prefabs? They refer to structures a company manufactures, designs and fabricates off-site at its manufacturing plant. Once they complete the manufacturing process, the various components are delivered on a flatbed truck.
The entire process is quicker, hassle-free and even cheaper than traditional construction since it saves you various costs like labor and raw materials. Kits are also better because you don’t require a crane or heavy machinery to assemble them.
But what do they contain, and what are the things you should check before ordering one? Get the answers to these questions below.
What will you find in the kit?
It contains the primary and secondary components necessary for assembling the garage. Here’s what you can expect to find in each:
Framing System
It comprises a hot dip galvanized frame that provides the best protection against rust. Garages are highly prone to rust from humidity, particularly the doors, because they come into contact with water during rains. Even the slightest build-up of moisture is enough to cause rust.
The primary and secondary framing parts are also coated with zinc, which prevents them from rusting and increases their lifespan.
Sidewall Panels
The side walls are usually made from 26 gauge steel, ideal for places with extreme weather conditions. You will receive the panels in one continuous piece, from floor to eave, without any breaks between the body.
Paints for these contain a siliconized polyester finish, a combination of silicon intermediates and polyester. They make the surface appear shiner and ensure they remain shiny despite external conditions.
Optional accessories available with these are fixed or operable wall louvres, service doors, and framed openings for windows and garage doors.
The colors you can choose from are Lightstone, gallery blue, fern green, Sahara tan and bright red.
Roof panels
The best companies use 26 gauge high tensile steel to make the roofs (high tensile refers to its ability to face extreme strain without breaking or deforming). They are usually coated with aluminum or zinc to prevent the accumulation of rust.
You should check if the builder provides a Purlin Bearing Rib (PBR) roof system. It refers to panels with an overlap system with increased contact between metals, making them optimally resistant to adverse weather conditions.
Trims
It refers to base trims which prevent leakage in your building while enhancing its security. Some colors you can choose from include Lightstone, burnished slate, gallery blue, black, and fern green.
Secondary framing components
These include parts like eaves strut, end-wall rafter and girt, door jams, purlins and door headers. They increase the foundation’s overall strength, functionality and durability.
For example, framed openings with door headers enable overhead door mounting without requiring extra steel and are insulated with foam closure to restrict the entry of windy rains.
Things to Check Before Ordering
Warranty Period
You should ask the company for a warranty on the paint, roof panels, capped roof fasteners, and the polyester coating on the trims and sidewalls.
How will they deliver the package?
It would be better to ask the builders how they would deliver the kit. Usually, deliveries of this type are done on a flatbed truck. You must also ask them if they would contact you before arrival since that will enable you to ensure clear access to the job site.
Who will complete the offloading?
Will you be responsible for offloading the structure, or will the company assist you in any way?
What happens if something is missing?
What happens if you receive a damaged or broken part during transportation? Is there a replacement option, and if so, what is the process?
A steel garage kit contains the essential components to build a garage. Made from high-quality steel, it ensures the best security and performance. You can assemble the structure by yourself or with a bit of help, thus saving plenty of money.
