The International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced significant progress in its efforts to reform with an independent governance and financial audit board. They took every possible step to make sure boxing becomes a safe and exciting game to play rather than a brutal sport.
The association made changes to boxing, boxing gloves and other equipment in general. So, in this blog post, we will look at some of the major changes made by the AIBA to make boxing safer and more fun.
INTERNATIONAL BOXING ASSOCIATION:
A new era in boxing began today with the adoption of a complete set of governance changes devised by independent experts by the International Boxing Association Extraordinary Congress, which changed the federation’s abbreviation from AIBA to IBA. We are rapidly and thoroughly transforming IBA to be fit and ready for the future. We have enlisted the help of prominent independent experts in sports integrity and governance in the preparation of the measures accepted by the members of the IBA today. And Gazprom, our General Partner, has supplied the resources that have made this possible.
There were 80 in favor and 5 against the modification during the virtual meeting. New IBA logo appeared in the background of the virtual Congress, with a film that promised a “new organization” playing.
Due to charges of match-fixing and corruption, the AIBA brand has been viewed as “tarnished” for some time now. The Congress endorsed a set of governance changes suggested by a working committee led by Swiss academic Ulrich Haas.

INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE:
The revisions were approved by a vote of 84 to one, with one abstention. Recommendations included requiring a “clear majority” of the current Board to be removed and the creation of a liaison person who has trust at both the governing body and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). IBA has also initiated the process of establishing weight classes and creating an Olympic qualification system, which will be implemented in 2020.
An autonomous AIBA will be able to raise funding and assist national federations with events by the 2024 Olympic Games. AIBA has to be the cleanest and most transparent organization by 2024 in order to shine.
Boxing’s Independent Integrity Unit, which is anticipated to be functioning by the middle of 2023, was one of the changes made. Elections will be held by June 30 to lower the Board of Directors from 28 to 18. Extensive eligibility checks will be done independently for all candidates for election. The Board’s composition is set to undergo a major overhaul as a result of term limitations and more stringent qualifying requirements.
With the new acronym at the center of the new visual identity and a new logo presented, IBA’s economic viability has been improved. Although the International Boxing Association changed its entire name to “International Boxing Association” in 2007, the abbreviation AIBA, which stood for the Association International de Boxed Amateur, was retained. By adopting this abbreviation, the sport begins a new era dedicated to maintaining the highest possible standards of ethics and guaranteeing that every boxer has an equal opportunity to compete fairly.
As part of the IOC’s most recent advice to IBA, the organization recommended that we implement governance improvements and broaden our funding streams. IBA has gone a long way in the last several years, and we were ready to go at full speed when this opportunity arose. The new International Boxing Association (IBA) is ready to serve boxers of the present and future, as well as those who support them.
MEDICAL REFORMS IN BOXING:
For a long time, people have argued about whether boxing should remain a recognized sport in modern society. From advocating for enhanced safety and medical reform to advocating for the complete elimination of amateur boxing, the American Medical Association (AMA) has shifted its viewpoint. In reaction to the AMA’s anti-boxing stance, the amateur and professional boxing communities have worked to improve safety measures.
SAFETY REFORMS IN BOXING:
Many measures have been made by the United States of America Amateur Boxing Federation (USAABF) to prevent acute brain damage and to study the long-term effects of amateur boxing on the neuropsychology of those who participate in the sport on a regular basis. Several medical measures have been implemented in professional boxing by state regulating authorities such as the New York State Athletic Commission to avoid and decrease brain harm. A federally chartered boxing commission, the United States Boxing Commission, and the Association of Boxing Commissions were sparked by the absence of a national regulatory agency to regulate professional boxing. Opposition to boxing by the AMA on medical and safety grounds. Since it is the national regulatory body for all amateur boxing in the United States, the United States Amateur Boxing Federation has taken several steps to prevent acute brain injury and is currently conducting epidemiological studies to assess the long-term neuropsychological consequences of boxing in amateurs. The medical and safety concerns and resistance of the AMA to boxing.
We will not hesitate to make whatever modifications necessary to provide boxers with the sport they deserve while we examine ways to strengthen sports integrity. In both amateur and professional boxing, medical and safety procedures to avoid or manage acute boxing injuries have been effectively adopted. With adequate medical screening, ringside physicians have the right to stop a fight, and emergency medical resources are readily available, boxing’s acute brain damage is no longer a medical problem.
